All About IIT JEE – 2016

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE or IIT JEE) was previously known as AIEEE (All India Entrance Engineering Examination) is a national level examination conducted by CBSE Board (Central Board of Secondary Education) for admissions into undergraduate programs in premier institutes like IIT, ISM, NIT, IIIT and GFTI. IIT JEE is conducted in 2 levels,

  1. JEE Main
  2. JEE Advanced

JEE Main is the first step that has to be cleared by IIT aspirants. JEE Mains 2016 will be conducted on April 3, 2016 in offline mode (Paper and pen based) and on April 9, 2016 and April 10, 2016 in online mode (Computer based).

Every year, more than 10 lakh students take up JEE Main. CBSE is the conducing body of JEE. An official notification is released usually in the month of November Until the end of January, students are given time to fill in the application form and pay the examination fees.

The admit cards are released in the month of March, which includes all the details pertaining the exam dates, exam center and student information.

JEE Advanced is the second and the final frontier that has to be cleared by IIT aspirants. The dates for JEE Advanced 2016 will be announced after the declaration of JEE Mains 2016 results. The criteria for students who can take up JEE Advanced 2016 will be decided by CBSE based on

  • Number of students who applied for JEE Mains 2016
  • Number of students who have cleared JEE Mains 2016
  • Number of seats available at IIT
  • Based on previous years’ JEE Main cut off marks

IIT JEE 2016- Exam Pattern

JEE Main 2016 has 2 papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. Students can take either of the one or both the papers. Paper 1 is held in both online and offline modes, whereas paper 2 is held only in offline mode.

IIT JEE 2016- Marks Allotment

Paper 1 has only objective type questions. Each section is given equal weightage

  • Part 1- Physics containing 30 objective questions with 4 marks allotted for each question
  • Part 2- Chemistry containing 30 objective questions with 4 marks allotted for each question
  • Part 3- Mathematics containing 30 objective questions with 4 marks allotted for each question

4 marks are rewarded for each correct answer and deduction of 1/4 (Quarter) mark for a wrong answer

In Paper 2 , Mathematics and Aptitude tests are objective type and drawing test involves drawing to test the drawing aptitude of a candidate. There are 3 parts in the question paper

  • Part 1- Aptitude test containing 50 objective questions with 4 marks allotted for each question
  • Part 2- Mathematics containing 30 objective questions with 4 marks allotted for each question
  • Part 3- Drawing test containing 2 questions with 35 marks allotted for each question

JEE Main 2016- Eligibility Criteria

The criteria outlines the age limit, qualifying year, number of attempts and many such parameters. The JEE Main 2016 Eligibility Criteria is

  • Age limit

The date of birth of a candidate must be on or after October 1, 1991 (for General Category). The upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years for candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD.

Note-  DOB mentioned in Secondary Education Board certificate is considered

  • Qualifying year

Candidates must have appeared in qualifying exam in at least 5 subjects in 2014 or 2015  or those who appear in 2016.

  • Number of attempts

The maximum number of JEE Main attempts are 3

  • Cut- off

Students must have an aggregate of 75% (For General Category) and 70% (For SC, ST, PwD) in CBSE class 12 Board exams

JEE Main 2016- Question Paper Pattern

  • For online mode, JEE question paper is usually mailed to the candidate’s registered email address. The same process is followed from the past 2 years and the same is expected to be followed even in this year.
  • For offline mode, JEE question paper is available in different sets (P, Q, R, S). The questions are in jumbled order in different sets.
  • JEE main 2016- Answer Key

The answer key of JEE main will be released by Central Board of Education after two weeks. The answer key contains all the correct answers and the students can cross check their answers from OMR sheet.

JEE Main 2016- Result (AIR)

JEE Main Results will be announced in the end of April. Declaration of  All India Rank and the list of students who are eligible for JEE Advanced 2016 will be announced.

Candidates who want to get admissions in to NIT can opt for it through JEE Main rank. Cut-off for each round, indicating opening and closing ranks will be announced at the end of each round.

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA)

JoSAA helds the counseling for JEE main and JEE Advanced. Whether the counseling for JEE Main and JEE Advanced will be held together or separately will be intimidated to candidates after the declaration of JEE Main results

After the declaration of  results of JEE Main and JEE Advanced, students have to register for counseling based on All India Rank.

Guidelines followed by JoSAA

  • A fixed time frame is given to students to select the College and branches based on preference
  • During the filling of choices, a mock seat allocation is displayed to give a rough idea to IIT aspirants on chances of seat selection and allocation
  • There are 3 rounds of seat allotment for IIT and ISM
  • There is just 1 round of seat allotment for NIT and GFTI
