Essential Preparation Tips For Exam Success

The word ‘exam’ instigates a sense of fear in the hearts of most students. The fear of the unknown is not easy to overcome. However, if you are prepared enough, there is no reason to fear. Many a times, even students with proper preparation get cold feet in the examination hall and that ruins their exams. However, preparation has no substitute when it comes to doing well in them. Apart from making you know the answers, proper preparation also boosts up confidence and when it comes to examinations, confidence is a good thing to have.

Below, we will look at some of the essential preparation hacks that will let you stay ahead in the game and make sure that you do not have the fear of exam in you.

Planning Ahead

At the beginning of the year, most of us think there is a lot of time to go before the exams and we will start studying after some days. That is a fatal mistake to make. That is not to say that you immerse yourself in books from the first day of school or college. But make study plans and allot some time everyday for studying. You can also make weekly goals. The idea is to study in small pockets, which is much less stressful and much more productive than studying for insane hours just before the exams.

Figure Out What Works Best For You

We are all very different from each other. What works for me may well prove to be a disaster for you. It is the same with studies. Maybe your friend studies late at night but that does not mean that it will  work for you too. Chalk out how you study best. There are no right or wrong ways of studying; just ways that work or do not work. Walk and study, convert the lyrics of your favorite song into a mathematical theorem, tell the story of the novel you have to study to your best friend; do whatever you think that works for you.

Write, Write And Write

This is a tried, tested and proven technique for better results. Whatever you learn, write it down from memory. The knowledge retention will be much more in the long run. Additionally, you will know where you are falling short and you can work on that area.

Take A Lot Of Tests

This one is simple. Get hold of a lot of practice papers from somewhere and solve them after finishing each chapter. You can also ask someone to prepare a question paper for you from a particular portion of the syllabus or the whole of it, if you are prepared. The more such tests that you take, the more you will be confident and comfortable with solving questions. Another major advantage of taking a lot of tests is that you will be better at time management in the exam.

Group Study

This one might be a little tricky. You need to find a small group of like-minded peers who share the same study objectives as you do. Researchers have shown that studying in such groups can significantly improve the ability to understand a topic. However, do not overdo it. Keep most of your time for self-study only.

Eat Healthy And Live Healthy

You might wonder what eating and lifestyle habits have to do with studies? The answer is, they have a lot to do. Eating the right food can sharpen your brain to a large extent. It can help you concentrate better and also increase the retention capacity of the brain. Food such as whole grains, oily fish, broccoli, nuts and blueberries are known to sharpen the brain.

Same with exercise. Researches have shown that at least half an hour of aerobic exercise daily improves the retention and recalling capacity of the brain.

If you follow these simple things throughout the year, there is no reason that you will have to fear the approaching examination. However, there are certain things you need to follow just before the exam for the best results. On the days just before your exams, you can try following the below-listed things for that little extra boost.

Sleep

First things first, sleep well every day before the exams. Getting a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep before examination days is a must. Students have the propensity to burn the midnight oil when the exams are approaching. While the spirit of hard-work is admirable, the end results might not be so. Studies have shown that sleep increases alertness of the brain and reduces stress.

Don’t Overdo Anything

It is understandable that you will be tensed just before the exam and feel like studying even while taking the shower. But in the end, that will prove to be counterproductive. You have to know when you need to stop studying. Over-stuffing the brain is not a good idea just before exams.

Motivate And Energize Yourself On The Day Of The Exam

Starting the exam day on a positive note is extremely important. Wake up in the morning and do something that relaxes you. Go for a walk, exercise, listen to your favourite music, do a crossword puzzle or anything else that lets your brain to relax. This will help you focus better in the examination hall.

Take A Chill Pill

This is probably harder than anything else on the list. On the day of the examination, you need to relax. Panic has never helped anyone. You need to remind yourself that you have prepared well for the exam and there is no reason that you should be worried. Take deep breaths and tell yourself that you are ready to take anything that comes your way head-on.

We know that exams are very important and getting a little nervous before them is only fair. But if you prepare for it the way you are supposed to prepare, there is no reason for worry. All the best for your examination and remember to make learning fun.
