The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), which is monitored by the the Council of Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is an examination for the 10th grade. It a private board of education in the country and is second only to CBSE in popularity. It covers schools across the country and is designed to provide quality education to school children in English language.It offers a choice of a wide variety of subjects, some of which are compulsory while others are optional. There are three groups in which the subjects are divided into-
- Group I- Contains subjects which are compulsory (English, Indian language, geography, history and civics)
- Group II- Optional subjects. Students need to choose any two from physics, maths, biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, agriculture, one foreign language, one Indian classical language and technical drawing.
- Group III- Optional subject. Students need to choose any one from Computer Applications, Art, Physical Education, Yoga, Economic Applications,Performing Arts, Fashion Designing, Home Science, Cookery,Commercial Applications, Technical Drawing Applications, and Environmental Applications.
As such, students are required to study six subjects in total. Subjects may have one to three papers. The final result is calculated by calculating the best of five subjects. The marks of English is compulsory, which makes it the best of the four out of the remaining five subjects.
The Indian School Certificate (ISC) is the 12th board examination held by the same council. Both ICSE and ISC certificates are very prestigious and colleges across the country and abroad recognise the marks provided by them. The curriculum is quite balanced and a lot of emphasis is given on extra-curricular activities such as seminars, exhibitions and inter-school competitions for the overall development of the students.
