The acquisition aims to make math learning even more visual and interactive for students from elementary school to university level
Many of us have personally felt fear or know someone who has experienced anxiety when confronted with a difficult math problem. Numerous studies show that visual mathematics facilitates higher-level thinking, enables communication, and helps people see the creativity in mathematics. With student-centricity at its core, BYJU’S, the world’s leading edtech company, has acquired GeoGebra — an Austrian company that has built an interactive learning tool for geometry, algebra, graphing, statistics, and calculus. The app is designed to help students learn and teach mathematics and science at all levels, from elementary school to university. This acquisition reinforces BYJU’s overall product strategy and incorporates GeoGebra’s capabilities into its existing mathematics portfolio, allowing for the creation of new product offers and learning styles.
It furthers BYJU’S aim to make math more engaging, leading to better learning outcomes. This synergy of two like-minded companies will bring comprehensive, personalised and immersive learning experiences to all students.
“The GeoGebra team has created a dynamic and exciting platform that compliments BYJU’S mission of providing impactful learning for students. The app has significant features that provide interactive resources that adapt to each child’s learning style and speed,” Anita Kishore, Chief Strategy Officer, BYJU’S, said of the acquisition. She added, “At BYJU’S, we have been making math enjoyable, visual, and engaging with the use of creative teaching and technology. This partnership will allow BYJU’S to provide even more students with interactive materials that adapt to each child’s learning style and speed. We will continue to improve, reinvent, and transform the way math is taught and learned now that GeoGebra is on board.”
GeoGebra was founded in 2013 by Markus Hohenwarter, Michael Borcherds and Stephen Jull and has a steadily expanding user base of over 100 million students in 195 countries. The software can be downloaded as an app or accessed online. Under the leadership of its Founder and Developer, Markus Hohenwarter, GeoGebra will continue to operate as an independent unit within the BYJU’S group.
Commenting on the acquisition Markus Hohenwarter said, “GeoGebra was created out of a passion to help students learn math in a visually appealing and engaging manner. BYJU’S shares our enthusiasm for learning and teaching, making them an ideal partner for our future endeavours. I am certain that this relationship will enable millions of kids to learn mathematics in an engaging manner, allowing them to overcome their fear of math and learn to master it.“
BYJU’S has over 115 million students registered and 7 million paid annual subscriptions. With students spending an average of 71 minutes per day on the app from over 1,700 cities, the edtech platform seeks to be a one-stop destination for students’ educational needs all over the world.
