HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY!

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”

-William Shakespeare

One couldn’t agree more with this beautiful quote from the literary legend. Everyone has friends to lean on to, during good times and bad, who will be there with you through thick and thin.

From planning homework sessions together and attending horror movie nights with popcorn, to becoming your secret-keeper and your ultimate mischief partner, your friends feature in almost all your fond memories. And we all wish that this friendship lasts forever. What better way to mark your friendship than with a unique band.

This Friendship Day is the right time to gift your beloved friends a handmade band as a token of your love and affection for them.

Find out how to make Friendship bands with the help of the following three DIYs.

Let’s get started!

Triple-braided Friendship bracelet

This bracelet is one is the easiest to make and is a perfect gift for Friendship Day.

Steps:

  1. Take the first coloured string and cut it into 12 inches. You will need two of such 12-inch strings of the same colour.
  2. Place them on the table.
  3. Repeat the same for the other two colours. At this point, you will have six strings altogether, two of each colour.
  4. Now align all the three pairs vertically into three columns and secure the top of these strings with a tape.
  5. Pull the left-hand pair over the centre pair so that it becomes the centre pair. Ensure to keep the pairs of thread flat, one strand next to the other, so they don’t get twisted as you go.
  6. Next, pull the right-hand pair into the centre so that it becomes the centre pair.
  7. Continue the process, first pulling the left-hand pair into the centre followed by the right-hand pair into the centre.
  8. Keep braiding until you reach the other end of the strings and then tie a knot to secure the end.
  9. Remove the secured tape from the top and tie a similar knot.
  10. Voila! Your three braided friendship bracelet is ready!

Sailor’s Knot Bracelet

Sailor’s Knot bracelets are not just cool but have deep meanings and some interesting tales. Old time sailors made bracelets from ropes off their ships for two purposes:

  1. To wipe their brow during physical activities like cleaning the deck and lifting cargos on and off the ship
  2. To show off their unique knot-making skills.

But over time, they started gifting these knot brackets to each other for friendship and good fortune.

Steps:

  1. Cut two 30-inch strands of your string. You can choose to contrast colours for a drastic look or keep it simple with the same colour.
  2. Fold the strings into half.
  3. Place the top string across the bottom string, making an ‘X’. At this point, the folding loops of the strings will be opposite to each other.
  4. Now twist the top string over the bottom string, forming a circle. At this point the loop of the strings will be parallel to each other.
  5. Pull the bottom loop over the top loop and then bring the ends of the top loop over the bottom loop.
  6. Then, holding the loop and the ends of the two strings, pull them across, making a knot.
  7. At this point, the loop and the ends of the top string will be at one end, and the loop and the ends of the bottom string will be on the other end.
  8. Holding both the sides and slowly pull the knot.
  9. Your sailor’s knot bracelet is ready.
  10. Tie it across your wrist to check the length and cut off the unnecessary portion.

Square knot bracelet

The square knot friendship band is super simple and fun to make. You can make it either by using three different coloured threads or just by two. You can also jazz it up by adding beads or alphabets in between.

Steps:

  1. Place one 20-inch thread vertically and secure it with a tape.
  2. Take the other 40-inch thread and fold it into half.
  3. Now secure the top end of the first thread with the folded thread with a tape to make a ‘T’ shape.
  4. Separate the three ends.
  5. Now, holding the left-hand thread, cross it over the centre thread, leaving a loop.
  6. Then pull it through the right-hand thread so that the left thread now becomes the base.
  7. Pass the right-hand thread across the centre thread to make a knot. Adjust the threads to fix the knot.
  8. Continue the same process throughout, till you reach the desired length of the bracelet.
  9. Once you reach the end of the bracelet, tie a knot on both ends to secure the bracelet.
