3 Ways Sound Can Positively Impact Our Brain

Team StoryWeavers|October 18, 2022, 17:14 IST|

Sound is a magical thing, but did you know that it can also help you improve your brain functioning? Different sounds affect our brain in different ways, and you can use the knowledge to help calm your mind, energise it for activity, and even improve your memory.

Existing research shows that sound has the ability to impact our brains. As more research is done on the impact of sound on the brain, evidence tells us some types of sound have a stronger impact than others. For example, according to a 2022 study, certain neurons in the brain ‘light up’ only to the sound of singing but do not respond to any other type of music!

Curious? Read on to learn more about the fascinating link between sound and the human brain:

Different brain frequencies

Different kinds of activity cause the neurons in our brain to interact differently, producing different kinds of waves. These waves occur at different frequencies. For example, a calm brain wave measured and mapped out while someone is asleep or resting will differ from brain waves produced while engaged in an activity that requires focus.

Scientists are now looking into how sound played at different frequencies can be used to impact our brains. This is part of neurotherapy research that deals with neurofeedback or the practice of influencing brain waves to achieve certain states. While we cannot change our brain wave patterns in everyday life as we’re usually not aware of the state they’re in, through future research, we may soon learn how to easily influence them for better mental and physical health.

Music can help you study better

Did you know music can help reduce stress and promote a positive mindset? Several research studies conducted in the past few decades have suggested that listening to music makes a physical difference in the way we respond to stress, both psychologically and physically, in terms of hormone response.

According to a 2007 study, certain music, especially classical music, can help our brain absorb and interpret new information more easily. Evidence suggests that music is able to engage our brain in a way that allows it to pay better attention to events and make better connections between the information absorbed. This can help your brain make sense of new material and process it better while studying. It can also help you make better predictions and improve your reasoning skills.

Affirmations to keep a positive mindset

Another good way to use sound to impact our brain in a positive way is by uttering and listening to daily affirmations. What are affirmations? They are a technique of transforming our negative thoughts into positive ones by repeating kind and compassionate words to ourselves.

Our brain is formed of millions of structures known as neural pathways. Every time we use that path, by repeating that same action or thought pattern, the pathway becomes stronger. Therefore repeating a thought or an action impacts the physical structure of your brain!

You can use this knowledge to build positive thought patterns and habits. Saying affirmations help us confirm positive beliefs and build strong neural pathways that support these beliefs. Listening to daily affirmations can help us achieve that too. Listening to positive affirmations, even in the background, while we do other work can let the less active parts of our mind absorb those beliefs more easily at a subconscious level.

But just like everything else, we have had to make a conscious effort to practice positive habits to reap the benefits of any of those methods!
