Mahatma Gandhi addressed a massive crowd at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Mumbai in 1942. There he called upon his countrymen to launch the Quit India Movement, which became a crucial part of India’s freedom struggle.

“The mantra is- 'do or die'. We shall either free India or die in the attempt; we shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery,” said Mahatma Gandhi in his fiery speech in Mumbai, calling out to the people of India in a final push to make the British quit.

The Cripps Mission was headed by a senior British minister called Sir Stafford Cripps. It was an attempt by the British to secure support and cooperation from India for World War II but failed miserably, leading to the onset of the Quit India Movement.

Aruna Asaf Ali was the freedom fighter who hoisted the Indian national flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan during the Quit India Movement. When prominent leaders and workers were arrested, she took charge of leading the All India Congress Committee.
