Getting a pet is a grand idea, but it’s vital to explore some doubts if there is a child in your house. Raising a pet is not that different from raising a child. Hence ensuring that both coexist and enjoy each other’s company requires you to carefully consider these factors.

If your child is 5-6 years old, the pet is more likely to be a companion for them. But toddlers might find it hard to distinguish between a pet and a toy. So mistreatment on your child’s part may result in causing a bite. You can read stories or watch cartoons which depict scenarios of a pet and a child being friends and looking out for each other.

It is crucial to zero in on a pet whose temperament is calm around a child. Dogs like Golden Retrievers and Beagles are gentle in nature. A fish is a suitable pet to steer your child away from getting harmed by larger pets. While a hamster is a good option as its playful antics can entertain and engage your child.

A child gets attached to their pet in no time. If you get one with a shorter lifespan, coping with their loss is not easy for your child and you. On the other hand, if you get a pet with a longer lifespan and your child gets busy with their routine, handling the pet becomes your responsibility.

Pets like cats and dogs require constant care and attention every day. Feeding, cleaning and exercising cannot be neglected. But if time is a constraint, it's an ideal solution to opt for pets that require less grooming, such as – fish, turtles, birds, guinea pigs or hamsters.

Ascertain whether your child really wants a pet or simply likes the idea of owning one. This can be determined by organising a play date with their peers who own pets. Another option is a trip to the farm side to check how they react in the presence of animals. It is a welcome way to prep your child before actually bringing a pet home.

Getting a cat or a dog is not advisable for a child under the age of four because they are still learning self-discipline. Besides, it is essential to pet-proof your house just like you baby-proof it. This includes putting the toilet seat down, securing personal belongings, and installation of safety gates.

Giving in to your child’s needs and getting a pet seems enough. But you can give your child age-appropriate responsibilities to tend to the family’s newest addition. A few tasks for a young child can include putting away their pet’s toys. Children who are 4-5 years old can pet or feed their pets under supervision.
