NASA scientists have issued a warning about an aeroplane-sized asteroid expected to make its closest approach to Earth today. The 100-feet Asteroid 2023 HY3 will pass by Earth at a distance of 6.3 million kilometres, as stated on NASA’s asteroid watch page.

TECHNOLOGY:

India’s AI supercomputer, ‘AIRAWAT’, has secured the 75th position in the prestigious Top 500 Global Supercomputing List. This announcement was made during the 61st edition of the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2023) held in Germany.

SPORTS:

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev secured his first Italian Open title in 2023 by defeating Holger Rune from Denmark. This victory marks Medvedev’s fifth title of the year and propels him to the second position in the world rankings, surpassing Novak Djokovic.

At the Golden Grand Prix 2023 athletics meet in Japan, Indian athlete Shaili Singh won a bronze medal in the women’s long jump. Singh achieved a jump of 6.65 metres, securing her third place on the podium.

According to the latest rankings released by World Athletics, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has become the new world number one in the men’s javelin throw with 1455 points. Anderson Peters from Grenada ranks second, followed by Jakub Vadlejch and Julian Weber.

ENVIRONMENT:

The International Day for Biological Diversity was observed on 22 May worldwide with the aim of promoting understanding and preservation of the Earth’s diverse ecosystems. The theme for 2023 was ‘From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity’.

American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a non-profit organisation, celebrates World Turtle Day annually on 23 May. The purpose of this day is to raise public awareness about the need to protect turtles, tortoises and their habitats. The theme for 2023 is ‘I Love Turtles’.

The government of Himachal Pradesh has introduced the ‘Green Hydrogen’ policy to promote the utilisation of green hydrogen and establish the state as a leading hub for its production. The policy aims to attract investments in large-scale renewable energy projects and ensure a consistent and sustainable supply of green electricity for electrolysis.

ACADEMICS:

The Ministry of Education and the US Department of State have jointly launched the India–US Working Group on Education and Skill Development. The objective of this initiative is to enhance cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in the fields of education and skill development.

IIM Kozhikode has been ranked among the top four schools in India and among the top 75 schools globally for its Open Enrollment Executive Education Programme, according to the Financial Times Ranking 2023. It holds the 72nd position among the top 75 providers of open-enrollment executive programmes worldwide.

The Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur has entered into a partnership with YES Bank through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The collaboration aims to provide essential support to startups incubated at SIIC and identify innovative startups for financial backing.

BANKING:

Google Pay, in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has introduced support for RuPay credit cards on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform. Users can now link their RuPay credit cards with Google Pay to make payments at both online and offline merchants accepting RuPay credit cards.

Axis Bank has launched ‘Sarathi’, a digital onboarding journey aimed at enabling electronic data capture or point of sale (POS) for merchants. This platform offers a seamless and hassle-free experience for merchants.

CURRENT AFFAIRS:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the third Khelo India University Games 2022 through video conferencing on 25 May, 2023. The event will be attended by Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The games have already commenced on 23 May in the Gautam Budh Nagar district.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched the 5.1 version of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)–Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN)–to enhance connectivity to remote areas of the country and achieve last-mile connectivity using helicopters. This round of RCS-UDAN is specifically designed for helicopter routes, a first of its kind.

Molbio Diagnostics and ShanMukha Innovations have collaborated to design, develop and commercialise point-of-care diagnostic devices called SickleCert. The objective of this collaboration is to diagnose haemoglobin-related diseases.
