SPORTS
In the Badminton Asia Championship 2023 held in Dubai, UAE from 25–30 April, 2023, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy from India won the men’s doubles title by defeating the Malaysian pair Teo Ee Yi and Ong Yew Sin in the final.

Ding Liren from China became the first male world chess champion after defeating his Russian opponent Ian Nepomniachtchi in the first tie-breaker of the fourth rapid game at Astana, Kazakhstan. He succeeded Magnus Carlsen of Norway as the winner of the World Chess Championship.

The Indian men’s cricket team overtook Australia to become the number one Test team in the latest ICC rankings released on 2 May, 2023. India tops the rankings with 121 points, while Australia is in second place with 116 points.

 

ACADEMICS
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) have developed a machine learning-based computational tool called ‘GBMDriver’ (GlioBlastoma Mutiforme Drivers) for better detection of cancer-causing tumours in the brain and spinal cord. The tool is publicly available online and could be a significant development in the diagnosis of cancer.

The University Grants Commission Chairman, M Jagadesh Kumar, launched the Central University Faculty Recruitment Portal CU-Chayan, a user-friendly portal catering to the needs of all stakeholders in the recruitment process.

 

SPACE
The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) has developed a low-cost star sensor called ‘StarBerrySense’ from off-the-shelf components. The device can accurately calculate where a satellite is pointing in space and is useful for any space mission. It successfully launched on 22 April, 2023, through Isro’s PSLV C-55.

An experimental Chinese spacecraft completed a 276-day mission in space to test the country’s reusable space technologies. It successfully landed on Earth on 8 May, 2023, marking a significant milestone in China’s push into reusable spacecraft technology research and ‘providing technological support for the peaceful use of space’.

 

CURRENT AFFAIRS
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy conducted the successful maiden test trial of ‘ADC-150’ from the IL 38SD aircraft in Goa. ADC-150 is an indigenously designed and developed air droppable container with a 150 kg payload capacity.

Cyclone Mocha forming over the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a very severe storm by 12 May, 2023, with wind speeds reaching 130 kmph. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts that the storm will likely intensify into a depression on 9 May and into Cyclone Mocha on 10 May, moving towards the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar around 12 May.

 

BUSINESS/ECONOMY
According to the World Economic Forum’s latest Future of Jobs report, the Indian job market is expected to see a 22% churn in the next five years, with top emerging roles in AI, machine learning and data segments.

The unemployment rate in India rose to a four-month high of 8.11% in April, up from 7.14% in March 2023, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The increase in the unemployment rate was due to higher labour participation, which rose to 41.9% from 39.7% in March.
