Homi J. Bhabha
Born : October 30th, 1909
Profession : Nuclear Physicist, Founding Director and Professor at TATA Institute of Fundamental Research and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Known as “Father of the Indian Nuclear Programme.”
Awards : Padma Bhushan, Fellow of the Royal Society, Adams Prize
Known for : Being the visionary behind India’s Three Stage Nuclear Power Programme and the Bhabha Scattering along with many other contributions.
Subramaniam Chandrashekhar
Born : October 19th, 1910
Profession : His scientific career spanned from Astrophysics, General Relativity, Fluid Dynamics to Radiation.
Awards : Nobel Prize in Physics, Copley Medal, Heineman Prize and several more.
Known for : The Astrophysical Chandrashekhar Limit and NASA named the third of its 4 “ Great Observatories” after Chandrashekhar, alongwith an asteroid that is named after him.
Narinder Singh Kapany
Born : October 31st, 1926
Profession : Physicist, known as Father of Fiber Optics (the backbone of the Internet), entrepreneur who founded Optics Technology Inc.
Awards : Pravasi Bhartiya Samman, The Excellence 2000 Award, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Known for : Often called the Man Who Can Bend Light, he made great contributions to biomedical instrumentation, solar energy and pollution monitoring.
A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Born : October 15th, 1931
Profession : Indian Scientist who served as 11th President of India (2002- 2007)
Awards : Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Hoover Medal, and several more.
Known For : Project Director for SLV-III, which deployed India’s first indigenous satellite, Rohini, launched into orbit in 1980, his book – Wings of Fire.
