This is 12-yer-old Rahul’s special book. During his summer break, he went on a holiday to New Delhi where he visited historic monuments like the Lotus Temple, the Red Fort, and the Qutb Minar. After he came back, he pasted the pictures from his trip in this book, and called it ‘My Vacation Journal.’ Rahul used colour papers, charms, crayons and sketch pens to decorate his journal.

What Rahul made was a colourful scrapbook with his treasured memories. Just like Rahul, people across the world use scrapbooks for various purposes – preserving notes, stamps, stickers, lyrics or news articles.

Today, let’s learn all about the interesting hobby of scrapbooking.

Where did it all begin?

In the Medieval Period, the nobles and the well-educated folks took to journaling their thoughts, emotions, and life events. These books written by scholars were kept in common places for everyone to read. This was until the printing press was invented. Soon people began printing their personal journals and shared it with their friends. Many famous personalities like Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, T S Eliot, and Queen Victoria made it a trend by recording their everyday lives.

According to historians, the earliest known surviving journal titled, “Journal d’un bourgeois de Paris,” was written by an anonymous French priest around 1409-1449. Today, it’s a treasure trove for historians as it offers a detailed account of life in the French capital in the 15th century.
