How to Improve Handwriting Skills: Simple Yet Effective Tips

Has it ever happened that you couldn’t read a note that you wrote yourself? If yes, then your handwriting might be in need of some work. You do not need to have the most beautiful handwriting that borders on calligraphy, but you do need to work on making it easy to read. Simple tips on how to improve handwriting 

Beautiful or even legible handwriting is not only for decorative or aesthetic purposes. It helps you communicate your ideas clearly with others. It can also be a way to express yourself. Not only that, but it also improves your eye-hand coordination. Here are some tips that can help you improve your handwriting and reap all these benefits. 

• Do hand exercises to warm up. Before you start writing, do some fun exercises like drumming lightly on the desk, touching the tips of your fingers with your thumb, keeping your hand still on the table and lifting your fingers one at a time, moving the wrist clockwise and anti-clockwise, and so on. 
• Trace pre-writing patterns. Practise standing line, sleeping line, curves, zigzags, waves, spirals and loops in different sizes on a piece of paper. It will ensure that you can hold the pencil or pen comfortably and help you gain control of your hand movements. And since these form the basics of letter-writing, it will also give you a confidence boost. 
• Work on different letter families. A letter family is simply a group of letters that are similar to each other. For example, z, v, w, x.  Practising these letter families one at a time will help you check if you are writing letters correctly. You could also shortlist letters that you need to practise more.  
• Space between the words. Most often, incorrect spacing between letters and words can make the handwriting illegible even when the letter formation is correct. One way to ensure the correct spacing is to write with a ruler or ensure that there is one finger space between the two words.
