It is no secret that we love our pets–dogs, cats, rabbits or even turtles. We give our pets names, get them toys, give them food and water, look after them, take them to the veterinarian when needed and treat them like family members. Most of these things are often done by grown-ups in the family. Today, we will look at how to take care of pet animals ourselves as little children. Excited to find ways to care for your beloved pet? Let’s go!

Questions that will help you take care of the family pet

Caring for different pet animals is different. You cannot care for a cat in the same manner as a dog. So, learning as much as you can about your family pet is very important. Here are a few questions that will help you learn more about the family pet and, in turn, will help you care for them in a better way.

  • What does our pet need to be happy?
  • What does our pet need to be healthy?
  • What are the food habits of our pet?
  • Are there some foods that we cannot give to our pet?
  • What are the house rules for the pet? Is the pet allowed in the kitchen or on the bed?
  • How will we know if the pet is unwell? Who is our pet’s veterinarian?

Simple tips to take care of pet animals

Though most of the heavy lifting is done by grown-ups in the family, there are a few things that children can do to care for the family pet animals. Here are a few of them:

  • Ensure that there is always water in the water bowl. It will ensure that the pet can drink enough water throughout the day and stay hydrated.
  • Even if you are not old enough to wash the bowl, you can help by putting the food bowl in the cleaning area or simply letting the grown-ups know that the pet has finished eating. As you get older, grown-ups may allow you to clean up the pet’s food bowl after a meal.
  • Follow all the household rules set for the family pet when you are with them. For example, no dogs on the bed; no more than one healthy treat per day; and so on.
  • Pay attention to the pet and let the grown-ups know if you think that the pet is not feeling well. You could ask them to explain the signs to watch out for so that you can do this more effectively.
  • Spend time with your family pet. Play with them and give them lots of attention and praise for being wonderful friends. You could also help the pet get some much-needed exercise. Like us, pets need to exercise too.

These are just a few suggestions to help out with our family pet. As you get older, your responsibilities towards your family pet will increase. Grown-ups might ask you to do more difficult chores, like giving food or taking the pet out for exercise, etc. We are sure that you will have lots of fun taking care of your pet and will build a lifelong bond with them that you will cherish forever.
