International Literacy Day : Come Celebrate Your Superpower
September 8 is International Literacy Day! Do you know what exactly literacy is? Is it only the ability to read and write?
Let’s find out!
Literacy is the ability to use a language effectively and to be able to read and write in that language. It is the first step to numerous wonderful things. It gives us the opportunity to become more educated, learn about the curious world we live in and earn a better livelihood.
Literacy is nothing short of a superpower, making you a superhero!
This International Literacy Day, here are a few ways you can use your superpower to empower those around you:
Teach somebody how to introduce themselves
Use your superpowers of literacy to teach someone how to introduce themselves in a language you are comfortable with. Teach them how to read and write a few lines about themselves which they can use when they want to talk to someone new. Here are a few simple questions that can guide you:
- What is your name?
- Where are you from?
- What is your favorite pastime?
- What is the most interesting thing about you?
Donate your educational material
Literacy is the cornerstone of knowledge and education. Empower others to expand their knowledge by donating your used books, old notes or previous years’ textbooks. These items may be done making you a superhero but they can empower more people and help them earn their cape!
Learn a few lines in a new language
The theme for this year’s International Literacy Day is multilingualism! Since you already have the superpower of literacy in English, use that to learn a new language. It could be learning to read a few lines in your mother tongue or looking up simple words in a foreign language. Learning a new language helps improve memory and focus and more importantly, it’s a great way to connect with new people!
