Team StoryWeavers|August 06, 2022, 19:51 IST| 316

Welcome to Sunday Challenge, the weekly quiz. In this edition, we make the trivial pursuit of journeying to five capital cities around the world, each one special in its own way. And of course, if you ace the entire journey, there’s a reward at the end!

Remember:

You can take a shot at the questions and field your guesses in the comments section below. Answers will be revealed on subsequent Sundays in the comment section. The fastest entries to get all answers right win a pair of Bluetooth headphones.

Ready? Here are your questions:

Question 1

Unlike most other countries, this country has three capital cities. The executive branch of the government is based out of Pretoria. The judicial capital is called Bloemfontein. Which country is this, and which is the missing capital city that is home to the legislative branch of the government?

Question 2

This capital city sits on the banks of the longest river in the world. Its country is the seat of one of the oldest and richest civilizations in the world. Named the ‘city of a thousand minarets,’ it is referred to as ‘Masr’ by locals. In 2011, the city was one of the centres of a country-wide protest by civilians against then-president Hosni Mubarak. Which city are we talking about?

Question 3

The Mughal Emperor Akbar founded this city as his capital in 1571. Its name translates to ‘The City of Victory’. Fifteen years after Akbar founded the city, he abandoned it when he went on a military campaign to Punjab. This city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Identify the capital city.

Question 4

When this city became the capital of this Central Asian country in 1924, it was named in honour of the national hero Damdin Sükhbaatar, who liberated the city from the control of Ungern von Sternberg’s Russian troops. The name of the city translates to ‘Red Hero’, and it is the coldest capital city in the world. Identify the capital city and the Central Asian country of which it is the capital.

Question 5

This city was founded by a Spanish conquistador in 1515 and was made a capital city thanks to its strategically placed harbour. The city, and the small country of which it is the capital to this day, saw one of the biggest armed revolutions in history, where citizens overthrew a military dictatorship in the 1950s. The city is famous for its cigars and is also the title of a hit 2018 song by a pop singer who was born in the country. Name the capital city and the country.

Take your guesses in the comments section below. Winners of this edition, along with the answers will be revealed next Sunday, so keep your eyes peeled!
