Indulge in colours with Marbled Milk Paper DIY
If you are looking for a DIY activity that mixes learning and fun – marbled milk paper is where your search ends.This simple activity gives a great opportunity to see the beauty of chemical reactions in the safest way possible. Technically, it is a two-part DIY. In the first step, we see how milk containing food colour reacts with soap, while the colours swirl in patterns that look like marble. The second step is to dip a paper in this milk and preserve the abstract art on paper. Both these steps come together to make the amazing Marbled Milk Paper DIY!
Ready? Let’s get started!
Materials required:
- Milk
- Water colour paper/ chart paper
- Earbuds
- Eye droppers
- Shallow dish/tray
Method:
- Cut the chart paper into small sized sheets that fit into the tray you’ve chosen for this experiment.
- Pour a thin layer of milk into the tray, such that the bottom of the tray is covered
- Add a few drops of food colours or even fountain ink or poster colours to the milk.
- Now dip an earbud into the liquid soap solution (can be dishwash soap mixed with a little water).
- Now dip this soap-soaked earbud into the milk, and gently touch the coloured drops in the milk with this earbud.
- You’ll see the colours exploding and creating unique swirling patterns in milk. What a fun thing to look at!
- Now, before the colours mix too much, gently place the sheet of paper on top of the milk for about a second and then lift it up. Keep the sheet aside to dry. Continue the same with other sheets.
- Let the sheets dry up completely, this may take a few hours.
- Your marbled milk paper is ready!
Children love colours. This experiment not only gives them a chance to play with colours but also to capture the beautiful swirling colour patterns on paper. You can let your child try this experiment multiple times, as the results will be different every time! The best part about this experiment is that despite being dipped in milk, the paper has no smell once it dries out. If you want to go the extra mile and make the marbled milk paper smell good, you can try mixing a bit of vanilla essence into the milk!
The colourful marble milk paper can be put to several uses like making cards, or as background for photo frames. Children can even cut them out in different shapes like a fish or an apple and others of your choice and use them in some other craft project!
