4 Mindful Breathing Exercises for Children

Previously on the blog, we have covered a breathing technique called finger breathing to help you understand that meditation doesn’t have to be hard. Today, we will learn four more simple yet effective mindful breathing techniques to relax, focus better and even to feel better when we are upset. Are you excited? Let’s go!

4 Fun mindful breathing exercises for little ones

Here is a list of mindful breathing exercises that will help your little one practise mindfulness. 

Belly breathing

How to do:

  • Step 1: Lie down on your back. 
  • Step 2: Put your hand on your tummy and breathe in. 
  • Step 3: Hold your breath for a couple of seconds.
  • Step 4: Slowly breathe out. 
  • Step 5: Notice how your tummy feels. 
  • Step 6: Repeat a few more times till you feel relaxed. 

Shapes breathing

How to do:

  • Step 1: Draw different shapes on an A4 paper in a big size. 
  • Step 2: Mark a starting point, middle and end on each shape. 
  • Step 3: Put your finger on the starting point and breathe in slowly as you move towards the middle point. 
  • Step 4: When you get to the middle, hold your breath for a couple of seconds. 
  • Step 5: As you move your finger towards the end point, slowly breathe out. 
  • Step 6: Repeat a few more times till you feel relaxed. 

Shoulder breathing

How to do:

  • Step 1: Sit down comfortably. 
  • Step 2: Roll your shoulders back. 
  • Step 3: Pull the shoulders up to the ear as you breathe in slowly. 
  • Step 4: Hold the breath for a couple of seconds. 
  • Step 5: Push the shoulders back down as you slowly breathe out. 
  • Step 6: Repeat a few times till you feel relaxed. 

Straw breathing

How to do:

  • Step 1: Hold a straw in your hand. 
  • Step 2: Slowly breathe in through your nose.  
  • Step 3: Hold your breath for a few seconds. 
  • Step 4: Slowly breathe out through your mouth into the straw.  
  • Step 5: Repeat a few times till you feel better. 

These are some mindful breathing techniques that will help you feel better when you are feeling upset or stressed about something. You can also practise them every day to feel happier and more relaxed.
