10 Things You Need to Know about Greta Thunberg

Team StoryWeavers|September 27, 2019, 10:35 IST| 9

Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has been on the news all over the world for her efforts to tackle climate change. If you haven’t read about her yet, here are 10 things you NEED to know about Thunberg to stay up-to-date.

  1. Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist.
  2. In August 2018, Greta staged a protest outside the Swedish Parliament, before the elections, urging the government to reduce carbon emissions.
  3. Sweden had the hottest summer that year in its history, making it the catalyst for Greta’s protests.
  4. Greta protested during school hours sacrificing her education to bring an action for the climate.
  5. The protests were called Skolstrejk för klimatet (school strike for the climate).
  6. Thousands of Swedish children joined her outside the parliament in the strike.
  7. Greta believes that children all over the world need to stand up for their future and demand action from the adults in charge.
  8. Now, students all across the world are conducting their own ‘School Strike for the Climate’ in what is being called the ‘Greta Thunberg Effect’. These strikes are often tagged #FridaysForFuture on social media.
  9. In August 2019, Greta went on a transatlantic voyage from the UK to the USA in a boat with solar panels and turbines to demonstrate that sustainable carbon-neutral travel is possible.
  10. On September 27, the world participated with Greta by taking to the streets to protest inaction by people in power over the changing climate.

The true essence of Greta, however, is her frank, blunt, to-the-point approach when holding the people in power accountable for their actions towards saving the planet.

We leave you with a few of her most powerful quotes. There’s no better way to get to know Greta than to hear her speak.

“I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if our house is on fire. Because it is.” – World Economic Forum

“Adults keep saying: “We owe it to the young people to give them hope.” But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic.”– World Economic Forum

“You told us that the future was something to look forward to. And the saddest thing is that most children are not even aware of the fate that awaits us.” – Speech to the UK MPs

“For more than 30 years, the science (on climate change) has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away?” – UN Climate Action Summit
