Follow us on,

Every month we share a Mantra of the Month that BYJUites can follow to bring them closer to a better version of themselves. BYJUites love reading these tips & tricks that help them better their holistic health, work-life and personal life.

This month’s Mantra focused on something we do every day, without even noticing but it has a major impact on our health. Working from home or working from the office, there is one thing that is part and parcel of our work lives – SITTING FOR LONG HOURS.

Truth be known, even though the chairs are comfy, all that sitting is bad for you!

Our bodies are not built to be sitting for long hours. Whereas now, we spend more than half of our waking hours sitting and it takes its toll in the long run on our physical health. But we all love our jobs and unfortunately, sitting for long hours is an integral part of our work-life.

But sitting is so basic and natural to all of us. How can it be bad for us?

At work, while driving and at home, most of the activities we do involve sitting. As a result, we end up sitting for more than 8 hours. When we sit for long hours every day, in the long run, it can lead to:

Body posture problems                       Obesity and heart diseases                                    Sedentary lifestyle

Now that we know sitting is bad for us, how do we tackle this?

There is a lot that we can do to mitigate the long-term effects of excessive sitting. And no, just exercising every day is not enough!

  • Support your back using a pillow while sitting
  • Position your screen at eye level to avoid straining your eyes and neck
  • Sit in an upright position without crouching
  • Ditch your office chair for an occasional standing desk
  • Take every opportunity to walk around your space
  • Keep a small water bottle that needs to be refilled to squeeze in short walks to the water cooler
  • Set reminders to stretch and move your body (set reminders)
  • Take the stairs instead of an elevator
