“It may sound clichéd, but there’s really no substitute for hard work. And while working hard is a celebrated concept, collaboration never gets its due, in spite of being critical,” says Ilu Sharma. “That’s one of the reasons why I love working at BYJU’S — collaboration is given the importance it deserves, helping me work in tandem with cross-functional teams and getting an insight into domains beyond my own,” adds Ilu.
Ilu is an Area Business Head at BYJU’S Tuition Centre (BTC), a role that offers him the opportunity to liaison with multiple teams. “I love the dynamic nature of my role. But more than that, it is the vision of the founders that has left a lasting impression on me, and truly keeps me going. It feels great to work with an organisation where people dream bigger than you can dare,” he says.

Starting off his journey with Aakash BYJU’S, Ilu was part of BTC’s founding team. “From planning to execution, I have been with BTC since its conception. To see months of hard work come to life in the form of over 250 live centres, invokes a great sense of achievement,” he says, adding, “In the end, it all comes down to ensuring that students are focused on their education and nothing hinders their learning experience. This is our mantra for every single day.”
In fact, what drives Ilu is a strong determination to succeed — something he developed after facing unfavourable odds. “I wanted to study engineering but couldn’t get into an engineering college due to financial constraints. However, it was with hard work and determination that I pursued my bachelor’s degree and then went on to do an MBA,” he shares.
This never-ending determination is backed by discipline honed by years of being a national-level athlete. “Hailing from a suburb of Mumbai, I had to travel miles to reach the ground to practice every morning. We hear our parents and grandparents telling us such stories, but I have actually lived this life! And that discipline has helped me achieve a lot; it’s something I bring to my work as well,” he adds.

Besides working with cross-functional teams, Ilu’s role also involves partnering with multiple stakeholders. He says, “Working with several teams means that you have to be mindful of everyone’s individual learning curve. That makes you a great team player.”
This, he feels, is what makes working at BYJU’S a unique experience. “Everyone has the scope to learn and grow several fold. Much like my own experience, learning is never limited to your own domain. The scope of gathering knowledge and the level of exposure to multiple functions really makes this opportunity unique,” quips the BYJUite.
While his role offers him ample scope for growth, Ilu believes it is in a work environment like BYJU’S where he thrives. He leaves us with this parting thought: “BYJU’S is not just growing at a stupendous rate, it ensures that we, the employees, grow with it, and it feels great to be a part of such an organisation. Being a career-focused person, BYJU’S has given me the opportunity to excel at what I do.”
